A Digital Archive of the Boston Police Department
Over the past two decades police activity and actions have been monitored and scrutinized. Boston specifically has come a long way since the 1990s, but it is important to stay active on the events that occur in our community. On April 29th of 2018 Suffolk University students Shane Halajko, Nicholas Nunez, and Nicolas Colantonio will be publishing a digital archive that covers the inner workings of the Boston Police Department, analyzing how it functions and the effectiveness of this.
This website is designed to inform the community about how law enforcement behaves within the city and the methods used to keep the city of Boston a safe environment. In our digital archive we will go over each event that has taken place in the recent history of Boston’s police department to bring them to where they are now. We’ve evaluated the system of community policing -- the BPD’s current form of policing -- and compare it to their old methods. We will also evaluate the different racial and ethnic tensions that still reside between the community and the Boston Police Department. This digital archive’s primary function is to give the viewers a full evaluation of the Boston Police Department based on performance and effort put into the community, while also recognizing needed areas of improvement in the department.
Team member Nicholas Nunez believes that “the website should help people understand the relationship between the BPD and the community, as well as the steps the BPD takes to help improve this relationship.” Another member of ours Nicolas Colantonio hopes that citizens recognize that “law enforcement is something that affects everyone, which is why everybody should be educated with the way officers handle the law and the methods that they use,” and hopes that the website “will help individuals gain knowledge about the police” so that the community can work with law enforcement to better the city. We’ve done our best to create a product that is based solely on the factual evidence and events to provide an unbiased view on the department’s performance and efforts.
The archive can be accessed through the url https://bostoncp.weebly.com/. Ideally, this archive will provide viewers with enough information to be educated on the department so that they too can work with them to improve relations and help to make their community a safer environment for everybody participating in it.
